Step 2: Do's & Don'ts for the First 48 Hours
Many feel the highs and lows associated with being in transition, experiencing an ending, losing a routine, and living in the unknown. This "emotional roller coaster" can take you through a wide array of emotions, including shock, grief, denial, relief, anger, depression, acceptance, interest, and finally enthusiasm. You may ride this roller coaster over and over again, especially during the early weeks of your transition. During the first 48 hours, it is especially important to remember a few do's and don'ts:
DO deal with and accept your emotions. Experiencing strong emotions is normal.
DO tell your family and listen to their concerns.
DO take care of yourself!
DO start preparing for your job search.
DON'T contact friends or neighbors.
DON'T take advice for immediate solutions, e.g., "Call Frank Jones at home, then you should see...."
DON'T be too critical of yourself.
DON'T take calls from friends or acquaintances to commiserate. Thank them for calling and tell them you will talk to them in the next week or two. This will give you time to develop a game plan and determine how they can help.
DON'T call friends at your former company to discuss the situation.
DON'T overindulge in alcohol or drugs.
DON'T badmouth your former boss or company.
It may feel uncomfortable to be looking for a job, but it's actually a creative time. Nothing new comes out of knowing the answers. It is only when we are in transition--in the unknown and away from routine and structure--that invention and creation takes place.
